A passport is an official document issued by the government authorities that allows an individual to travel outside the boundaries of India to other countries. It is not only a measure of identification but also a proof of one’s nationality. However, people find the application process for passports extremely hectic and time-consuming as the process has innumerable sub-stages.
To make the application process for passports efficient, the government of India announced some amendments and updates to the passport rules of 1980. The amended passport rules aim to make the application process easier and quick but not lenient in any way. The verification would still be strict as passports are one of the most crucial official documents.
Read the article to learn what exactly the amended passport rules are and how will they solve the old problems.
The government of India has issued some new passport rules that all citizens must know about. All the major rules are mentioned below in detail for one’s better understanding and reference:
As per the new passport rules, only birth certificates issued by the Registrar of Births & Deaths, Municipal Corporation, or any other relevant authority will be considered for the verification of the date of birth of the applicants born on or after October 1, 2023.
People who were born before October 1st, 2023 can submit their transfer certificates issued by recognised educational institutes or Permanent Account Number (PAN) issued by the Income Tax Department or driving licence for the verification of their date of birth.
To protect people’s information, the residential information won’t be printed on the last page of their passports like it was before. Instead, a barcode will be printed for immigration officers to access one’s residential data.
The government of India has also issued separate colour-coded passports as per the categories of people such as a red-coloured passport for diplomats, a white-coloured passport for govt officials, and a blue-coloured passport for the general population.
As per the new passport rules, the names of people’s parents won’t be printed on the last page of the passport. This has been done to be sensitive to people’s lives and to treat them with respect in whatever way possible.
The amendments to the passport rules of 1980 have been introduced to increase efficiency in the system to benefit both, people and national and international authorities. The new rules have not only focused on technicalities but have also focused on people’s feelings and their right to privacy.
