India has been tackling and eventually winning against innumerable issues and problems and one such problem is malnutrition. People from low-income and backward classes have been experiencing and battling with malnutrition for decades, especially women and children.
The Indian government has introduced several measures to protect people from getting into the grasp of malnutrition and they have proven to be very effective but still, not completely effective. That is why, the recently announced Union Budget of 2025 has a special provision for nutritional support schemes such as the Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0.

The Finance Minister of India, Smt Nirmala Sitharaman presented her 8th consecutive budget wherein the cost norms for nutritional support schemes such as the Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0 have been increased. As per the new Budget 2025, around Rs. 21,960 crore is allocated to the Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0.
The additional allocation of funds aims to provide nutritional support to over 8 crore children, 1 crore pregnant and lactating women, and 20 lakh adolescent girls, especially those from rural, remote, and northeastern regions of the country.
The Anganwadi Scheme was launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development as a part of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) in 1975. It focuses on promoting the health and overall development of children up to the age of 6 years including pregnant and lactating mothers. These centres are located in semi-urban or rural areas primarily.
In addition to providing health support, Anganwadi centres also contribute toward improving gender equality and women empowerment. They carry out regular awareness programs as well as address the problems of the people and the need for Anganwadi centres.
Prime Minister Overarching Scheme For Holistic Nutrition or the Poshan Abhiyan also known as the National Nutrition Mission (NNM) is a flagship program of the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Poshan 2.0 is the updated version of the Poshan Abhiyaan Jan Andolan. Poshan 2.0 focuses on improving nutrition and health for children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Unlike Poshan Abhiyaan, Poshan 2.0 takes it a step further, it is more than just addressing food insecurity. It is handling clean drinking water, proper sanitation, promoting healthy hygiene practices, and overall ensuring a more comprehensive approach towards health.
Poshan 2.0 concentrates on delivering better resources and improving the infrastructure for a wider and better outcome.
The Union Budget of 2025 has a special focus on increasing the funds for nutritional support schemes such as the Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0. With this, the government is expecting to eradicate the problem of malnutrition completely from its roots.
