The digitisation of agriculture will soon revolutionise India's agriculture through the Digital Agriculture Mission. In its capacity, the MoAFW is launching the SHGs centred Aadhaar-linked Farmer IDs, referred to as ‘Kisan Pehchaan Patra’ to digitise farmer details and enhance service delivery. In this article, we aim to explain what exactly are Farmer IDs, what they are good for, and what is currently being done to popularise them across the country.

Farmer ID is a device identity card for farmers that is connected to Aadhaar and state record books. The following points will help you to understand it better:-
Purpose: It is used in the surveillance of farmers and collection of information concerning; ownership of land, patterns of crops grown and details of livestock.
Budget: It will have a budget of ₹2,817 crore with ₹1,940 crore in funding from the Central Government.
Use Cases: Today this card makes it possible for farmers to access facilities such as crop insurance, loans and comprehensive maps of village land.
Part of Agri Stack: The Farmer ID is the central element of the so-called ‘Farmers Registry,’ which is part of the larger Digital Agriculture Mission.
The government is targeting to create digital identities for the farmers in a phased manner of 11 crore as follows:-
FY 2024-25 Target: 60 million farmers.
FY 2025-26 Target: 30 million farmers.
FY 2026-27 Target: 2 million farmers.
Implementation Strategy: There has been encouragement of States to have a camp-mode approach within a short period and they are encouraged to register as many people as possible.

To encourage the states, the Centre has come up with guidelines and incentives that will help speed up the registration process.
Camp Organisation: Locally, the states will embark on conducting camps to consolidate the farmers together and take their details effectively.
Incentives:
₹15,000 per camp organised.
₹10 per Farmer ID generated.
Certain states have already made progress in their journey to revitalising their economies; others are only beginning the implementation process.
Advanced Implementation: Rendering cash crops and food grains including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh among others.
Testing Phase: Chattisgarh, Assam and Orissa.
Funding Support: Under the Special Assistance scheme, the Ministry of Finance has provided ₹5,000 crores for registering the Farmers and the Registry will remain open till March 2025.

Farmer IDs are beneficial since they help the farmers get an identity on the social media platform as well as help them know how the mobile money services work. Farmer IDs are introduced to today’s agriculture and they aspire to increase better delivery of benefits.

Data Accuracy:
A unique and detailed database of demographic and farming information that policymakers can use to better inform their decisions.
Enhanced Services:
Subsidies and compensation are some of the most helpful when in the form of digitalised records in terms of process facilitation.

Digital Agriculture Mission and especially the Farmer ID is the biggest boon for Indian agriculture. With an effort to democratise the farmer’s information to bring the benefits relating to farming, the government in question seeks to extend optimal control, simplify the process through which farmers could obtain the mentioned benefits, and modify many farming-related processes.
